Let's put an object in front of the plano mirror. The rays from the object may travel in any direction, but the angle of incidence of each ray will equal the angle of reflection.

To the observer, who is at the left of the mirror, the reflected rays will appear to be diverging from the direction of the mirror. The observer's eye-brain processing says "The rays are traveling in a straight line, so they are diverging from some point to the right."
