Here is the representation of the calculation in the previous slide, where the focal length is 1 and the object distance is 3.

All measurements for f, p, and q must be in the same units. They can be in inches, cm, meters, or, if you are using graph paper, "squares“ or units.

In the calculation, q = 1.5 is positive. Remember that a positive direction horizontally is in the direction that the light ray travels? So the image forms to the right of the lens in the diagram, because the light rays are still traveling from left to right.
