The conventions in this slide will make more sense when we start making diagrams. They are conventions that are agreed to so that everyone will understand everyone else’s diagrams. Don't worry about the definition of "axis", if you do not already know it. We will discuss it very soon. Instead, think of "up" as positive and "down" as negative.

There are two dimensions that are important to us in the coming discussion: horizontal and vertical. A ray might travel in a positive direction horizontally and a negative direction vertically. Using the above definitions, where would that ray be going?
