The steps shown on this slide should become part of your Standard Operating Procedure. Each eye care practitioner may find different methods to fulfill the Duty to Warn. A fact of life is that many practices operate with a limited staff and find the idea of adding more to the workload overwhelming. YET, the ramifications of NOT including the Duty to Warn could mean devastation both for you and for your patient.

Take a look at the list above - these are points you need to cover in order to fulfill your Duty to Warn. Following are some of the basics to help you cover the needed issues:

 Spend time with your patients

Use a questionnaire that they fill out in the waiting room. Make sure they fill one out every year - things change! Refer to the questionnaire while talking to your patients.

Ask questions about their responses (e.g. “Judy, I notice you like to do yard work. Do you realize you need to wear protective eyewear while doing things like trimming hedges or pruning rose bushes?”)

Give them information, such as a copy of the Lens Menu.
Explain why they may NEED safety glasses in addition to their dress glasses.

Tell them how to clean their glasses - explain the danger of damaged lenses.

Make notes and add them to your patient’s files (have your patient sign the questionnaire).

REMEMBER - A PATIENT’S EYE INJURY COULD END UP BEING YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!
