The High Velocity Impact Test is important. In the past, only frames needed to pass a high velocity impact test. With today’s more stringent standard, lenses must now pass this test if they are to be used for High Impact.

The fabricator of the prescription safety eyewear is responsible for supplying lenses that have passed the High Velocity Impact Test. The fabricator is identified as the party responsible for completing the prescription and applying the monogram on the lens to indicate the completed product meets the ANSI standard.

Three plano lenses are submitted to the testing facility. Lenses must be identical; that is, the same material, manufacturer, and coatings must apply to all three lenses. Every individual combination of lenses with coatings must be tested at least once each year.

For example: if lenses are purchased from manufacturer “T” and an AR coating and coating process is applied by manufacturer “Z” then 3 of those lenses must be submitted for testing.

If the lab uses more than one AR coating manufacturer, but uses only lenses from the same manufacturer “T” then those lenses must be tested with that coating, as well.

Every combination of every manufacturer’s lenses with every combination of coatings must be tested. Lens TINTS do not need to be tested – only coatings. The reason for this is that some coatings weaken the lens.

Plano lenses are used for the test because they are considered to be the weakest lens. Note that lenses are to be edged with an industrial safety bevel and cut to 55.0mm diameter.
