If a lens passes the High Velocity Impact Test (for example, a polycarbonate lens material with an AR coating that was tested, having all 3 test lenses pass the test), it can be marked with a “+” mark. This mark will be a clear indication to a safety professional that the employee’s safety glasses will protect in an environment where High Impact is evident.

The Special Markings for specialty lenses remain the same. That is, a “V” indicates the lenses are photochromic. An ‘S” indicates special purpose lenses, such as a rose tint or didymium lens that is worn by a glass blower to filter light. If the lenses are more than a tint, that is, a filter that blocks out light transmission, such as a lens for a welder’s helper, the Shade # must be marked, such as a 2.5 or a 3.0.

NOTE: LABORATORIES TYPICALLY DO NOT HAVE EQUIPMENT THAT IS CAPABLE OF MEASURING LIGHT TRANSMITTANCE – IN THAT CASE, IT IS ADVISED THAT ONLY AN “S” IS MARKED ON THE LENS.

All marking must be permanent.

In this example, W+2.5, manufacturer “W” makes a lens that meets High Impact and has shade 2.5 filter. Therefore, a plus “+” mark is added after the manufacturer’s mark. This “+” (plus) mark MUST NOT be placed on a lens that does not meet the High Impact standard.
