Another component of industrial safety eyewear programs that is different from traditional retail eyewear sales is payment. Under the current law, employers are required to provide and pay for personal protective equipment required by the company to do his or her job safely and in compliance with OSHA standards. If a company determines that a tool shop employee could possibly be at risk of flying particles, they will be required to provide safety eyewear (possibly with side shields) for that employee.

It is important to note however, in the case of prescription eyewear, which is considered to be very personal in nature, if the employer allows the worker to use the eyewear off of the job, the matter of payment may be let to labor management negotiations. This is according to the United States Department of Labor OSHA USDL:94-520 Oct. 20, 1994. If permanently attached side shields are required on the job, most employees would not wear them off of the job and could argue that the employer is responsible for payment. Many employees view their prescription safety eyewear as an added job benefit especially if they are allowed to select more stylish frames. It is completely at the discretion of the employer to determine if the employee can take their safety eyewear for home use. It is worth mentioning that many safety directors realize that many of the same eye hazards that exist on the job are present around the home. Therefore, it is in the best interests of the company to protect their workers both on and off of the job.
