To be successful in the safety eyewear business, it is critical that we first understand the basics: why is safety eyewear worn? who is required to wear it? how to deal with companies and contracts? and how to generate profits for your business?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to protect their employees from workplace hazards that can cause injury. Safety eyewear is one category of personal protective equipment (PPE) that is required under the Title 29, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.132. This standard requires employers to establish general procedures, called a PPE program, to give employees necessary protective equipment and to train them to use it properly.

Because there are various forms of safety eyewear, the standard also provides an eye and face protector selection guide that lists the type of operation, the potential hazards and the recommended protectors. This guide can serve as a reference tool for you when you begin discussions with the company safety director.

When necessary, side protection commonly in the form of side shields may be required. It is noted that detachable side shields are acceptable. Here you will need to use some common sense - permanently attached side shields might be a better alternative for several reasons. Firstly, the employee will not be able to take them off and risk losing or forgetting to wear them. This helps increase compliance. Secondly, with permanently attached side shields the employee is less likely to wear safety eyewear off of the job if the employer allows. This will allow you to sell a dress eyewear program more effectively to the employees.
